The officer purchased a sandwich at Bon Appetit on 418 Beach 129th Street in Rockaway Park at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, police said. When he bit into the sandwich, he found a razor blade inside the sandwich, which cut the inside of the officer’s mouth.
The officer was taken to the Nassau Community Medical Center, where he was treated and has since been released. He was on duty at the time he was injured.
“To repeat: The NYPD has zero tolerance for acts of violence against our police officers.” NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. “A sandwich bought at a Queens deli on Thursday contained a razor blade that cut the inside of a cop’s mouth. He’ll be okay, but a full investigation into this abhorrent act is underway.”
“First, we would like to extend our deepest apologies to the officer involved in this unfortunate incident. In our experience, the NYPD officers of the 100th and 101st precincts have been an exemplary example of professionalism and service to not only our business but to our local community in the Rockaways, Queens, and New York City at large,” Bon Appetit management said in a statement released the day after the incident. “If given the opportunity, the management of Bon Appetit would like to personally apologize to the officer and the rest of the local law enforcement community.
“We are fully cooperating with the NYPD during their investigation of this incident and will share any surveillance camera footage that is available with them. In addition, we will be conducting our own internal investigation and review of our employees and food preparation processes.”
The NYPD announced that it was launching an investigation into the incident, have recovered a DNA sample from the blade and is seeking to gain access to security footage at the deli. No arrests have been made. Check Daily Voice for updates.
